What is FASTag system? « Back to Questions List

FASTag is a simple, convenient electronic toll collection system implemented in India. The mechanism  enables  a customer to pass through the toll plaza without stopping to make toll payment. FASTag works on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. This technology aids payment by direct debit to the wallet or savings account linked to FASTag. As of now, the facility is optional.

The electronic toll collection system is operated by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), the company incorporated by NHAI and  National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) is responsible for implementation of the system.   In FASTag system, a small sticker type tool is affixed on the windscreen of the vehicle. On passing through the toll booth, RFID tag reader identifies the presence of the FASTag automatically and deducts the toll fee directly from the linked account without requiring human intervention.  The tags are supplied by participating banks or official tag issuer. At the time of activation, the tag gets linked to the purchaser’s savings account. FASTag can be recharged by the user based on requirement.

According to NHAI, FASTag has unlimited validity. They have also provided dedicated lanes in toll plazas to support  FASTag users. So FASTtag users need not wait in the queue and can pass through without halting to make payment in cash. The tag system make journey through national highways hassle free. To encourage tag usage, NHAI offers cashback too on FASTtag usage.
