History of World Environment Day

What is the importance of World Environment Day?

The environment supports the life on the planet. We choose convenience over conservation. The unscrupulous misuse of the environment with scant respect for the mother earth is causing irrevocable damages to the environment,  even questioning the existence of the planet itself.  We cause Global Warming through the exorbitant emission of Greenhouse Gases.  We generate unimaginable quantum of garbage every day. The garbage we generate is burnt illegally releasing toxic gases which in turn heats the earth’s atmosphere. Burning of plastic waste is one of the major reasons for this.  Remember the awareness that has been created in the recent past against burning of plastics and also the pollution being caused by automobiles.

What is the theme of the World Environment Day, 2014?

Melting of icecaps on the poles is one of the direct impact of the increased temperature. The water thus generated reaches the seas causing water level in seas to increase. This causes beautiful beaches, towns and villages and houses and agriculture  on the banks of the sea getting immersed in sea. Thus the melting of ice on the poles and rising of sea level result in imbalance in the environment.  The Theme of WED,2014 is “ Small Islands and Climate Change”  with the official slogan “Raise Your Voice, Not The Sea Level”.

Excess of everything is bad and we have to restrain ourselves from the misuse of the planet, if we bother about handing over the beautiful planet to our next generation. We need to change our lifestyles and the change must start with us.
