When did Time Person Of The Year start?

The process of selecting a Man of The Year started in 1927. It also evolved as a face saving exercise of the editorial Board of Time. Charles Lindbergh carried out his historical Trans-Atlantic flight of 1927, but Time magazine failed to cover the event. To compensate the same, an issue with a cover story featuring Lindbergh as the Man Of The Year was published and the tradition thus created has been continued. The title was changed into Person Of The Year since 1999.

What is the selection process for the Time Person Of The Year?

The cover feature need not be about individuals alone. A person, group, idea, event or object that really made its presence felt in the year is selected as Time Person Of the Year. That made Computer, Endangered Earth and Ebola Caregivers find their place in the year end annual issue.

Time magazine holds an online poll for the readers to vote for  the Person of the Year. However, the final decision on who should be featured is taken independently of the poll by the editors of the magazine. Hence, the "People's Choice" need not always be the Time Person Of The Year.
