Elephants can’t jump….

'A winner is someone who recognizes his given talents, works his tail off to develop them into skills and uses these skills to accomplish his goals.' – Larry Bird, American coach

The African elephant weighs between 3.5 to 7 tonnes and needs to consume vegetation equal to 5% of its body weight every day. An adult elephant needs 30 – 50 gallons of water per day. Bull elephants can grow up to 4 metres (about 13 feet) in height. The trunk of an elephant contains more muscles than the whole human body and they can lift up to 350 kg with their trunks. There is one thing though that elephants can't do: they can't jump.

The bones in an elephant's foot are more closely packed together than other mammals so they do not have the flexibility or spring mechanisms that would enable them to jump. Other animals usually use their ability to jump to reach something such as food, or to get out of harms way. The elephant can reach up to 7 metres  with its trunk which really makes it unnecessary for it to jump. And because of their sheer size and the power they possess, they rarely face situations of grave danger. Even though elephants can't jump, they can do many other things.

Sometimes we wish to possess certain qualities or a certain position because we think we need it. But when we take a close look at what we already have, we realize that we're adequately equipped. Maybe we just fail to see it because our focus is elsewhere. Or maybe we just haven't developed our talents and abilities to their full extent.

Just as baby elephants need to learn how to use their trunks, we need to learn how to develop our skills and abilities. The elephant depends on its trunk for survival…we depend on our skills and abilities in the workplace to survive.
