Carbonated drinks and our body

Carbonated drinks are very common in all parts of the world. Sodas have become a part of the diet especially among the younger generation. Regular intake of this refreshing beverage doesn’t prove to be very “healthy”.

The main ingredients of  carbonated drinks are carbonated water, sugar and acids like citric acid or phosphoric acid or both apart from flavorings. Carbonated water is water with dissolved carbon dioxide gas in it. The process in which carbon dioxide gas is dissolved under pressure into the water is called carbonation. This causes the water to have a slightly sour taste because of its acidic nature. The pH of carbonated water would in the range of 3 – 4. The presence of gas causes bubbles or fizz and it is this gas that comes out when the container (that is sealed under high pressure) is opened. 

The maximum carbon dioxide that water can hold is 8 grams per liter. Phosphorus acid and citric acid present in the carbonated drinks are not good for the teeth. They erode the teeth by gradually softening the hard enamel. Regular consumption of soda not only affects teeth but also with interferes with the calcium absorption within the body.    

 Research suggests that soda does not remove calcium from the body but its consumption results in lesser intake of milk, water and other natural food causing lesser calcium intake. The beverage industry is trying to develop new soft drinks with added vitamins and minerals and make them ‘healthy’. In order to stay healthy and enjoy a glass of fizzler, it should be taken after a meal or not before.
