Living among the grains of soil, they feed on decaying plant, animals and the roots of living plants. They burrow deep with the help of powerful and stout forelimbs which has sharp claws.

Moles swim through the soil by pushing the dirt with their paddle like clawed feet. Their sense of sight is not very effective. Their sensitive snout and sense of smell help them in navigating through the darkness underground. They locate their prey and escape from danger only by detecting vibrations in the soil.
