Where do moles live?« Back to Questions List

Moles are tiny creatures having resemblance to rats except for its long snout. These are found mostly in North America and Eurasia. They are capable miners tunneling long passages through the soil and producing mounds of soil. They spend most of their times underground living in total darkness. They are thought of as blind creatures inhabiting a meadow always remaining below the ground.

Living among the grains of soil, they feed on decaying plant, animals and the roots of living plants. They burrow deep with the help of powerful and stout forelimbs which has sharp claws.

Moles swim through the soil by pushing the dirt with their paddle like clawed feet. Their sense of sight is not very effective. Their sensitive snout and sense of smell help them in navigating through the darkness underground. They locate their prey and escape from danger only by detecting vibrations in the soil.
