Initially, the ranking was carried out depending on the area of operation. Separate rankings were done for universities and colleges, management, medical, law and architecture institutions, engineering colleges etc. Now, a common overall ranking is given irrespective of the operation along with a discipline specific rank. An institution will be considered for common ranking if it satisfies any of two conditions:
a.    The institution has at least 1000 enrolled students
b.    The institution is a centrally funded institution or university.

The parameters for both rankings are similar, but weightages are different. The major parameters considered for ranking include resources, research, graduation outcome, outreach, teaching and perception of stakeholders. The major parameters have sub- parameters too.

The ranking of institution is voluntary. Those institutions that are desirous of ranking shall upload the relevant data in the format given in NIRF portal. NIRF carries out random verification of data to ensure accuracy of submitted data. It is mandatory for participating institutions to keep the data in their publically visible website for three years to ensure transparency.
