Bullet train project of India is becoming a reality. Launch of the bullet train project was made jointly by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on September 14, 2017 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.  Here are the salient features of the dream project.  

1. The bullet train service to become operational in 2022. 

2. The service will link Mumbai and Ahmedabad, two major cities in India. The distance of 505 km between the cities will be covered in less than three hours.  The service will have a maximum speed of 350km/h.

3. Twelve stations will be there in the route of the bullet train.  Halting time in each station will be 165 seconds each. To cover the distance of 505 km, bullet train  will take two hours and 58 minutes with stops in all 12 stations.  The proposed stations are Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati.  Four hours cleaning time will be there after running for 20 hours.

4. The land requirement for the project is around 825 hectares. Only 2% of the route will be through land. 92 per cent of the route will be elevated and six per cent will go through tunnels.  7 km of the tunnel between   Boisar and Bandra Kurla  Complex in Mumbai (total of 21 km) will be under sea. 

5. Initially 1.6 cr commuters are expected to utilize the service per year. The bullet train project expects to have around 1.6  lakh commuters per day by 2050. 

6. Railways plan to commission the project with 35 bullet trains and around 70 trips per day.  The number of trains is envisaged to reach 105 by 2050. Initially 10 coaches with total seating capacity of 750 passengers will be plying and the number of coaches will be increased to 16 coaches with seating capacity of 1250 passengers subsequently.  The bullet train will have executive and economy classes. 

7. Total project cost is around Rs. 1.10 lakh crore. Japan will extend a soft loan of Rs. 88,000 crore ( 80% of the project cost). The interest for this loan is a nominal 0.1 per cent.  The loan has to be repaid over a period of 50 years with a repayment moratorium of 15 years.  Of the loan of Rs. 88,000 cr, Rs. 6,000 cr will be disbursed immediately. The balance amount will be released in traches after completion of land acquisition.
