Jamini Roy was an Indian painter whose works were influenced by the folk arts of Bengal. Jamini Roy ( April 11, 1887 -  24 April 1972)  born at Beliatore village in west Bengal got training in classical western style painting from Government College of Art in Kolkata. But soon, he got influenced by the folk and tribal art forms. Inspired by the Kalighat Pat style painting, he introduced a new style of painting that soon captured the attention of the world.  On his 130th birthday on April 11 2017, Google doodle honored him by exhibiting a doodle inspired by his Black Horse painting. 

In his works, Jamini Roy used natural colors which were earthy or mineral. Among his works, “Ramayana” spread over 17 canvasses is considered an  invaluable creation. The painting starts with Valmiki and ends with the hermitage of the sage after the agnipariksha of Sita, thus capturing full circle of Ramayana. The objects of his painting included common people in his own village. His major works include Bengali woman, Gopini, Krishna and Balarama, Santal Boy with Drum, Seated Woman in Sari, Makara, Queen on Tiger, Warrior King among others. 

He succeeded in portraying the simplicity in the life of the folk people, making art accessible to a wider section and giving  own identity to Indian art. The nation honored him by awarding Padma Bhushan in 1954. In 1955, he became the first fellow of the Lalit Kala Akademi. It is the highest honour awarded by the Akademi. His works are included among that of  the "Nine Masters" by the Archaeological Survey of India, Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India. The works of theses masters are considered art treasures for their artistic and aesthetic value.
