Dark chocolates are made from seed of cocoa plant called cocoa bean. They are known to be rich in powerful antioxidants and flavonoids. Flavonoids are components found primarily in plants and are similar to vitamins. They are also found in things like teas and dark-colored berries. These flavonoids tend to have positive cardiovascular health benefits lowering the risk of heart disease. Chocolates also have a biochemical effect that reduces clumping of platelets which cause blood to clot.

A good quality dark chocolate is rich in fiber, iron, magnesium, copper, manganese and few other minerals. A study also reveals that dark chocolates consumption can improve blood flow to the skin and protect the skin from sun. All these benefits can be obtained from periodical consumption of quality dark chocolates with 70% or higher cocoa content. The amount of sugar contained in them has to be significantly less compared with other kinds of chocolates.

So how do dark chocolates protect your teeth? The teeth enamel gets damaged by the acid produced by bacterium oral streptococci present in the mouth. The anti oxidants present in the dark chocolates act as anti-bacterial compound preventing the damage of enamel. It also helps inhibit the growth of dental plaque which is usually a pale yellow film that develops on the teeth.

Though dark chocolates have important health benefits, do remember it is definitely not equivalent to having a healthy meal.
