Our human body produces electrical energy which our brain interprets to understand our activities and respond to the same. For instance when we touch something, our nerves carry an electric impulse to the muscles we need to use. We know that an electric current always produces a magnetic field. Even weak currents that travel along the nerve cells in our body produce temporary magnetic fields. These fields are very weak and are about one-billionth of the earth’s magnetic field. Two main organs in the human body where the magnetic field produced is significant are the heart and the brain.
The magnetic field inside the body forms the basis of obtaining the images of different body parts. This is done using a technique called Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The important component of MRI scan device consists of magnets whose unit of measure is tesla or gauss. The magnets are capable of creating a magnetic field of 5000 to 20,000 gauss (0.5 tesla - 2.0 tesla). Earth’ magnetic field is about 0.5 gauss which shows that these magnets are quite powerful. The Analysis of images generated by the magnets helps in medical diagnosis.
