5 Great ideas:Inventions and discoveries of recent origin

We have in the earlier articles seen the great ideas from the first phase of human life till the second half of 20th century. The inventions and discoveries of the   last few years of the 20th century and the first few years of 21st century have totally transformed human life. They have influenced, the way we think, communicate and behave. Now, let us examine 5 great ideas of recent origin.

Great ideas of recent origin: The World Wide Web (WWW)

The World Wide Web

Though World Wide Web and internet are often used interchangeably, both are not the same thing.

The Internet is a huge network of networks, that links computers all over the world together, using wires and wireless technologies.

The  World Wide Web is the collection of linked pages that are accessed through a web browser over the Internet. On August 6, 1991, Sir Tim Benner Lee introduced WWW. Prior to that internet provided only text. The WWW has contributed to the creation of ever-increasing global information data base.

Great ideas of recent origin: Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Past experiences and learning from such experiences make humans to take complicated decisions. Artificial Intelligence is the branch of science that supports machines think like humans. Computer programmes that try to imitate the thinking process of human are created and these programmes enable computers to take decisions. Researches of over 50 years have  succeeded in creating systems which can mimic human thought, understand speech and perform many tasks.

Great ideas of recent origin: Digital Cell Phone

By early 1980, analog cellular phones started creating their impact. Standardization was felt essential for forward journey and in 1982 itself the Groupe Special Mobile (GSM) was established to develop a common cell phone system throughout Europe. The signaling and speech channels of GSM are digital and hence it is termed second generation (2G) phone system. In this method, voices are digitized, compressed and then sent. Other GSM services include data transmission, call forwarding, caller identification, and call holding, Short Message System (SMS) etc. Recent developments have paved the way for 3G and 4G systems.

Great ideas of recent origin: Global Positioning System(GPS)

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is the method of identifying the location of an object or person based on the signals received from satellites. GPS system picks up the signals from satellite and defines the location from the signals. The system was developed by US government in 1993. Military applies GPS to track targets, locate positions and project missiles. In everyday life, GPS is used for car and seacraft  navigation, tracking of cell phone users, identification of routes, surveys of tectonic activity such as earthquakes and tremors.

Great ideas of recent origin: Optical Camouflage

The optical camouflage aims making persons or objects invisible. Susumi Tachi, a Japanese professor,  is the key person behind such researches. The method developed by his team works by filming the background environment and projecting it onto a coat worn by the test object. The coat is made of thousands of tiny beads that reflect light back to its source. Advanced researches are taking place in this field.
